Strain Measurement 

Extensometers are primarily used for material testing as they can accurately measure material properties. Understanding material properties is crucial for engineering design and quality control purposes.   

Extensometers are vital for identifying stress-strain measurements. They measure strain or displacement directly of the material or specimen being tested.  

A strain measurement is a requirement of most ASTM & ISO standards, and an extensometer is the most common method of measuring strain in a wide variety of materials and industries.   

The extensometer is used to measure the yield point elongation, compression, bend displacement, yield strength, strain hardening exponent, strain ratio or shear deformation of the material being tested.   

The key properties of a material such as total elongation, elastic modulus, offset yield complete the stress-strain curves. 

The strain is calculated by dividing the change in the test specimen’s length by its original gauge length.
