Friction Tester COF Testers

Used to measure the coefficient friction of materials such as packaging substrates and printed cartons, our Coefficient of Friction (COF) Testers allow you to test both static and dynamic COF.

Benefit from intuitive touch screen interfaces and fast, repeatable measurements, which are displayed on the screen immediately after testing. Many of our models such as the Rhopoint Universal Friction Tester also come with pre-loaded ISO/ASTM/friction test methods, with the option to create a custom test.

To ensure your COF machines are accurately measuring friction forces, we also offer industry-leading calibration and repair services. Have a look at our selection of coefficient of friction testing equipment below —  if you need any further assistance, get in touch with one of our experts.

Friction Testing Machine FAQs

What is a COF tester machine?

A COF tester machine measures the force of friction between two surfaces. This enables professionals in quality control and research and development to determine the “slip” and “grip” of materials during interaction, both with themselves and different surfaces.

Why are COF testing machines important?

COF measuring devices are highly engineered to deliver precise, replicable results, but what if the friction calculations are wrong? Erroneous friction measurements means inaccurate material’s slip and grip characteristics, resulting in:

  • Inefficient machinery: Improper frictional settings can cause key components to wear out prematurely or unable to grip and hold as intended.
  • Product failures: Whether the friction is too high or too low, it can lead to costly damage, manufacturing, and production issues. For example, product with low COF (surfaces are slippery) could slide off conveyer belts.
  • Safety issues: Think about tyre tread compounds. If they’re unable to grip and hold properly, this could cause accidents.

In what type of applications are COF machines used?

A coefficient of friction testing machine is a vital tool in many industries for measuring the kinetic and static friction values of packaging films, fabrics, paper, and similar materials.

Common applications include:

  • Ensuring packaging films and sheets have the necessary slip properties to prevent slippage and ensure secure packaging during transit.
  • Evaluating the surfaces of fabrics to ensure wear comfort and durability.
  • Measuring the frictional properties of paper and other printing materials to ensure smooth, high-speed printing operations and paper products meet industry standards.

What do I need to consider when choosing a COF testing machine?

To improve process stability, they should evaluate COF testing equipment that supports relevant standards, provides repeatable results, and offers strong calibration and service support.

  • Do you need it to have both static and dynamic measurement capability?
  • Is the friction tester machine compatible with the materials you need to test?
  • What standards are you testing too? For example, TAPPI T816 measures the coefficient of static friction of corrugated and solid fibreboard.
  • How big is your laboratory space? Space-saving friction testers are ideal if you need something smaller that can be moved around the factory.
  • Look at machines with an automated sled lowering system. This eliminates many of the operator errors associated with friction testing.
  • Easy graphical reporting and data export, so you can carry out full statistical and trend analysis.
  • Intuitive and easy testing. No or little operator training is required for all of AML’s machines.
  • Calibration support and service

What standards do our COF testing machines adhere to?

Our COF instruments meet many common COF measuring standards, such as ISO 8295 (plastics – film and sheeting) and ASTM D330 (peel adhesion of pressure sensitive tape). This ensures regulatory compliance and your products meet material testing standards.

Optional attachments are available with friction testers like the Rhopoint Universal Friction Tester for additional test types like peel testing and seal integrity tests. Again all necessary standards are covered. For instance,  all peel tests are to FINAT international standards.

What is the price of a Coefficient of Friction tester?

If you’ve got your eyes on a COF tester, the price will vary considerably, depending on factors like brand, capacity, and the technical features. Like any test instrument, the more bells and whistles, the higher the price.

Fine-tune your friction testing with AML Instruments

Whether you’re a packaging and plastics engineer or a quality control manager, a reliable and accurate COF tester is an invaluable asset to many industries.

Our machines give you both the kinetic and static friction data required to anticipate wear, ensure safety, and gain a complete understanding of how your materials will really perform.
