Thermometer Calibration

Imagine a world without thermometers. We wouldn’t be able to accurately diagnose fevers or know if our food and drink was safe to eat until after we’d consumed it. Thermometers are used in a wide variety of settings to monitor and control temperature in many different industries, including automotive, HVAC and building management, scientific research and laboratories, and healthcare. Yet, the only way to be confident your temperature measurements are correct is to use a calibrated thermometer. From calibrating digital thermometers to resistance thermometers, thermocouple thermometers, and even laboratory oven thermometers, AML Instruments are proud to offer an impressive range of thermometer calibration services, with the capability to provide UKAS accredited services for many thermometers and other temperature measuring equipment. Read on to learn why calibration of a thermometer is so important and how we can help with your temperature calibrations, both on-site and off-site.

What does it mean to calibrate a thermometer?

The thermometer calibration process involves comparing your thermometer’s measurements with a reference (calibrated) thermometer or on a substance with a known temperature to ensure its accuracy and reliability.

You can then make the necessary adjustments to ensure your thermometer is within an acceptable degree of accuracy — this will vary depending on the type of thermometer being calibrated and its application.

How AML Instruments can help with calibrating your thermometers

AML Instruments are accredited to calibrate many types of thermometers to UKAS standard. Whether we come to you, or you send your device(s) to our in-house laboratory in Lincolnshire, we’ll ensure your time without temperature measurement is minimal.

We’re happy to travel

With engineers positioned all over the UK, it’s no hardship for us to visit your facility and calibrate your thermometers. We’ll arrange a date and time beforehand that suits you. Before you know it, you’ll be back taking the temperature measurements you’ve come to rely on for your operations.

Send your thermometers to us

The cheapest option is to send your thermometers to us by courier or through the post. We will send your calibrated thermometers back to you within five working days via UPS complete with a traceable calibration certificate.

Need your thermometers back quicker?

Don’t forget our 24/48 hour express service. Before you post your thermometer(s) to us, let us know in advance if you need them back sooner and we’ll ramp up the heat to return them within a day or two.

Thermometer calibration while you wait

If you’re located close to our premises in Lincolnshire or working in the area, there’s always the option to give us a call to see if we can book you in for a “calibrate while you wait” service. This is just as it says on the tin — you wait (you’re more than welcome to a cuppa) and we calibrate your thermometer.

Do thermometers need to be calibrated?

Like all measuring instruments, thermometers can suffer drift over time. While calibration of thermometers is not required for all applications, a calibration certificate is the only legal document that signifies its accuracy and quality.

The need for certification will depend on the requirements of your industry or regulatory body, as well as the intended use of the thermometer. For example, just think about how much disruption and damage an inaccurate reading and damage could cause to product quality in the manufacturing process.

Whether your application requires a UKAS calibrated thermometer or you just want peace of mind that your thermometer will offer long-term operational reliability and performance, it’s not worth putting your operations, reputation, and customers at risk.

How often should thermometers be calibrated?

Every thermometer will come with recommendations as to how often you should calibrate it, but there are no set time parameters for when you should calibrate your thermometer(s). For temperature measuring instruments, a calibration cycle of one year is typically recommended, but different factors can necessitate shorter intervals between calibrations.

These include:

  • Frequency of use — thermometers used regularly or in critical applications should undergo more frequent calibrations.
  • If your thermometer(s) are switching from one extreme temperature to another, such as from measuring very hot to very cold substances.
  • If you spot an irregular reading, the thermometer hasn’t been used for a long time, or you’ve just purchased a brand new thermometer.
  • If the thermometer has been dropped or potentially damaged.

Why is it important to calibrate a thermometer?

  • Ensures the accuracy and reliability of thermometers across a wide range of temperatures and applications.
  • Reduces the risk of errors and failures that can affect product quality, safety, and performance.
  • Saves time and resources by outsourcing the calibration process to our expert engineers, who have the necessary skills, equipment, and experience.
