Onsite load cell calibration

If you have several load cells or other force measuring apparatus requiring calibration, it often makes sense for us to visit you. This can work out very cost-effective when you have five or more load cells, while ensuring minimum downtime and alleviating the risk and time taken to ship expensive force measuring equipment.

Our on-site engineers are equipped with a calibration frames for the calibration of load cells, crane scales and load links. The frame is equipped with master load cells with a working range from 1N up to 500 kN or 100 gram to 50 Tonnes.

We can also calibrate a wide range of Universal Testing Machine (UTM) Tensile Testers and custom test rigs from 1N up to 500 kN or 100 gram to 50 Tonnes in tension or 1N up to 3000 kN or 100 gram to 300 Tonnes in compression.

Of course, you’re very welcome to send in your precision load cells to our lab. As standard we offer a five-day turnaround, with the fast-track option of an express 24 / 48-hour calibration service. This express service needs to be pre-booked and date agreed in advance.

Load cell calibration is where the load cells are adjusted to get reliable and repeatable readings that are within accepted tolerances of accuracy. This typically involves loading the load cell system in small increments and evaluating each output signal or displayed reading against a master (reference) load cell.

All measuring instruments lose accuracy over time and are prone to measurement errors. Heavy or mis-use may speed up the deterioration in a load cell system’s accuracy. Load cells are delicate precision measuring instruments, meaning they can easily be physically bent or twisted by overloading or off-centre loading.

With time and use, there is a difference between the value indicated at the sensor output and the actual value of a known load or force that will change.

Measurement errors can be caused by several factors:

  • Physical damage
  • Using the load cell in poor conditions
  • Poor electrical connections
  • Errors on the indicator reading the electrical signals from the load cell
  • Incorrect span, offset or zero settings on the load cell indicator.

Along with fellow leading load cell manufacturers, we recommend a yearly calibration interval to ensure validity of measurements and safe operation. However, when used in harsh environments or for critical measurements, it will require calibrating more often. Likewise in some applications, a 24-month calibration period might be more appropriate.

Before starting the load cell calibration, an inspection of the mechanical and electrical systems and installation (where applicable) must be carried out. This includes physically checking the load cell cables and coiling them to protect them from damage.

A master load cell is then put in line with the load cell being calibrated. However, it must be at least the same accuracy class or ideally three times more accurate than the accuracy expected from the calibrated system. For small capacity load cells a mass set is used.

A number of specialist adaptors are used to ensure perfect alignment of the force measuring device is calibrated and the calibration master in use. Misalignment errors can be very large and must be eliminated. The design of these adaptors is set out in ISO 376.

The load cell calibration procedure involves performing a set of corrections on a load transducer and instrument (amplifier) to ensure the force sensor operates accurately. Typically between 5 and 10 points are selected across the range of the load cell.

Since 1st Jan 2012, the correct standard for calibrating force-proving instruments is ISO 376: 2011 o, replacing ISO 376:2004. However many industrial force measuring systems are calibrated to the manufacturer’s specifications and maximum permissible errors.
