How does the SWINTEK pendulum work?

The equipment operates using a pendulum that oscillates freely on two balls resting on the surface of the sample. The speed at which the oscillation decays indicates surface hardness:

Pendulum Characteristics

The Persoz is quadrangular, weighs 500 g and is released at 12°, while the König is triangular, weighs 200 g and is released at 6°. Both measure hardness, but Persoz produces more oscillations on standard glass than König.
