The Clemen scratch tester machine relies on a controlled scratch method to evaluate the hardness of paints and coatings. It uses a 1mm spherical carbide indenter, enabling the device to determine the resistance of paints or coatings to surface damage under increasing loads.

Two models are available: the Clemen Manual Scratch Tester and the Clemen Automatic Scratch Tester.

The manual version provides manual movement of the indenter and a lod range of 0-2000g, while the motorised (automatic) version offers greater precision and repeatability through automatic lowering/lifting of the tool.

How the Clemen Scratch Tester Works

A 1 mm tungsten carbide ball slides 60 mm over the sample surface. Based on the applied load, the coating shows varying degrees of damage — from surface marking to full failure.
