PAT Tester Calibration

Portable appliance testing (commonly known as PAT testing) involves different types of electronic and visual tests to check whether electrical appliances such as power tools, microwaves, and laboratory ovens adhere to safety standards. PAT testing is recommended to all businesses that operate portable electrical equipment, ranging from healthcare and office environments to construction and manufacturing sites. Given the dangers associated with faulty electrical equipment, it’s vital to calibrate PAT testers to ensure workers or on-site visitors who come into contact with any electrical appliances aren’t at risk. AML Instruments specialise in the calibration of many types of electrical test equipment, including PAT Testers. Whether one of our friendly engineers visits you or you opt for our off-site PAT tester calibration services, we promise a detailed assessment and calibration of your PAT tester(s), along with a fast turnaround.

We’ll sort a time for you to drive to our premises and one of our engineers will calibrate your PAT tester while you wait. Your tester will be ready and calibrated within 30 to 45 minutes, so you can drive away in no time with an all singing, all dancing PAT tester. This service does require pre-booking.

Does a PAT tester need calibrating?

Like all testing equipment, PAT testers can drift over time from the manufacturers specifications due to general wear and tear. An inaccurate tester can fail to pick up faults with electrical appliances, leading them to be passed as safe. Not only will you get distorted results, but it also poses significant risks like fires and electrical shocks.

While there is no legal requirement to calibrate your PAT tester(s), should a fault occur,  a traceable calibration is proof your equipment was safe, functioning correctly, and of standard at the time of testing.

Remember, calibration only proves your PAT tester was accurate at the time of the test and is not evidence of ongoing accuracy, so it’s important they’re continuing to measure correctly.

How often do PAT testers need calibrating?

Most manufacturers recommend your PAT testers are calibrated annually. However, you should up your pat tester calibration frequency if you have any reason to doubt your machine’s accuracy. For example, overheating issues, damaged cables, etc.

If you’re unsure, we’re happy to advise the best course of action to ensure your PAT testing equipment is kept working within industry recognised standards.

Can I calibrate my own PAT tester?

Some manufacturers supply check boxes, these are a check to be used to check your equipment is operating correctly in between calibrations. These are NOT a full calibration — PAT Testers must be fully recalibrated using specialist equipment.

PAT tester calibration should be carried out by a calibration specialist, otherwise you risk damaging the instrument. Attempting to calibrate your own PAT tester could also result in potentially dangerous consequences.

AML Instruments have a trustworthy team of calibration engineers with the equipment and knowledge to calibrate your PAT tester efficiently and accurately, so play it safe and leave your PAT testers in our capable hands.

How much does PAT tester calibration cost?

Our PAT tester calibration prices start from as little as £65. The final total will depend on how many PAT testers you need calibrating and which of our on-site or off-site services you require.
